An Economic Valuation of Pollination Services in Georgia AgEcon
Barfield, Ashley; Bergstrom, John C.; Ferreira, Susana.
The production of many crops depends on biotic pollination. As pollinator populations decline, assessments of the potential consequential loss of economic value are critical. We estimate the economic value of pollination services ($608 million), crop vulnerability ratio (21 percent), and pollination’s contribution to agricultural production value (5 percent) for Georgia.

Applying and Extending the Sustainable Value Method related to Agriculture – an Overview AgEcon
Illge, L.; Hahn, Tobias; Figge, F..
Sustainable Value is a method to measure the contribution of an economic entity, such as a farm or the entire agricultural sector, towards the sustainability (sustainable development) of a region, a country or on a global scale. A positive sustainable value is created once resources are used more efficiently than by a benchmark. It shows the excess return that is created or lost by the use of economic, environmental and social resources by an economic entity relative to a benchmark. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview on the characteristics and requirements of the SV and to provide information on (a) possible applications and (b) extensions of the SV method related to the agricultural sector. A particular emphasis is put on the choice of...

ARE SOUTH AFRICAN CO-OPERATIVES CREATING VALUE AgEcon
Hall, John H.; Geyser, J.M..
This article examines the use of Economic Value Added (EVA) as a performance measure that South African wine co-operatives can use to determine whether value has been created for members. A detailed explanation of EVA is given, and the components of EVA are calculated. The EVA's of a number of co-operatives have been calculated and analysed. In addition the EVA of specific types of co-operatives indicate that the fruit and vegetable sector is a constant value creator. It is clear that in order to create value, the rate of return on invested capital must be greater than the cost of capital. Certain co-operatives and types of co-operatives provided the blue print for this.

Az erdők éve 2011! – Nemzetközi összefogás az erdőkért AgEcon
Solymos, Rezso.
„Kísértet járja be Európát és Észak-Amerikát: az erdőpusztulás kísértete.” Ezzel a drámai hangvételű mondattal kezdődik a World Resources 1986.

CHAPA, BEEF COW/CALF HEALTH AND PRODUCTIVITY AUDIT, PART V: QUALITY ASSURANCE PROFILE AgEcon
Dargatz, David.
As part of the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS ), USDA:APHIS:Veterinary Services conducted a national study of beef production, the Beef Cow/Calf Health and Productivity Audit (CHAPA). This study was designed to provide both participants and the industry with information on cow/calf health, productivity, and management practices. The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) collaborated with USDA:APHIS:VS to select a producer sample that was statistically designed to provide inferences about the nation's cow/calf population. Data for Part V: Quality Assurance Profile were collected by federal and state veterinary officers (VMO's) in 18 of the largest cow/calf producing states between January 1 and January 31, 1994. The average...

Coût d’opportunité versus coût du maintien des potentialités écologiques : deux indicateurs économiques pour mesurer les coûts de l’érosion de la biodiversité ArchiMer
Levrel, Harold; Hay, Julien; Bas, Adeline; Gastineau, Pascal; Pioch, Sylvain.
The cost of ecosystem services degradation is a major topic as underlined by the TEEB program (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity), which proposed an assessment of the costs of policy inaction in the field of biodiversity conservation. In the same vein, the report of the French Centre for Strategic Analysis on the Economic Approach to Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services turns its attention to the value of ecosystem services, suggesting some elements that could help measure the cost of biodiversity degradation. There is however some confusion regarding the notion of cost. Thus, in the case of TEEB the proposed cost assessment translates into monetary terms the loss of potential profits from ecological services. Yet, another way of assessing these...

Economic Issues in Assessing Research Priorities in Feed Grains Nutrition AgEcon
Brennan, John P.; Singh, Rajinder Pal; Singh, Inder Pal.
Researchers have abundant technical opportunities to select various options for improvement of nutritional characteristics of feed grains. Choosing between those opportunities is a difficult issue for research funding organisations. In this paper, an attempt to address those research resource allocation issues is reported. The approach to use in analysing improvements in the feed quality of grains is discussed. By defining the problem as a cost reduction for the livestock industries, the impact of improvements in grain nutrition can be defined by their impact on the least-cost feed rations for different livestock categories. Using that approach, the benefits of improved feeds can be evaluated, and research priorities can be determined on the basis of which...

Economic Potential for Nutritional Improvement in Feed Grains AgEcon
Brennan, John P.; Singh, Rajinder Pal; Bialowas, Adam.
Feed grains researchers have abundant technical opportunities to select various options for improvement of nutritional characteristics of feed grains. Choosing between those opportunities is a difficult issue for research funding organisations. In this paper, efforts to address the relative economic benefits from the different options for feed grains nutritional improvement are reported. The economic benefits arising from nutritional improvements in various feed grains are examined and compared to the benefits from increasing yields of the feed grains rather than improving their nutritional value. The results of the analysis of these options are presented in an economic surplus framework that enables the major beneficiaries and the relative gains for the...

INOVAÇÃO DE VALOR COMO INSTRUMENTO DE DESENVOLVIMENTO DO AGRONEGÓCIO NA AMAZÔNIA ORIENTAL AgEcon

Labor Cost and Value of Citrus Operations with Alternative Technology: Enterprise DCF Approach AgEcon
Iwai, Nobuyuki; Emerson, Robert D.; Roka, Fritz M..
The prospect of immigration policy reform has renewed growers’ concerns of serious labor shortages and cost increases given that a large portion of the workforce is unauthorized for U.S. employment. This concern of labor shortages and cost increases is more serious for specialty crop agriculture which is highly labor intensive. Specialty crop growers may address the problem in various ways, but likely options include adoption of mechanical harvesting. In the current paper we study the citrus industry case and estimate the value for two operational modes (hand and mechanical harvesting) using the enterprise discounted cash flow (DCF) approach. Further we implement a simulation to forecast how the value for each operational mode would change with a change in...

Market Institutions: Enhancing the Value of Rural-Urban Links AgEcon
Chowdhury, Shyamal K.; Negassa, Asfaw; Torero, Maximo.
This paper examines how market institutions can affect links between urban and rural areas with specific emphasis on goods market integration in the national context. Traditionally, development researchers and practitioners have focused either on rural market development or on urban market development without considering the interdependencies and synergies between the two. However, more than ever before, emerging local and global patterns such as the modern food value-chain led by supermarkets and food processors, rapid urbanization, changes in dietary composition, and enhanced information and communication technologies point to the need to pay close attention to the role of markets both in linking rural areas with intermediate cities and market towns and...

Seasonal variation of nutrients and energy in tambaqui's (Colossoma Macropomum Cuvier, 1818) natural food BJB
SILVA,J. A. M. da; PEREIRA-FILHO,M.; OLIVEIRA-PEREIRA,M. I. de.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of fruits and seeds as food items in the natural diet of the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). During one year, tambaqui's stomach contents were collected, and their nutritional and energetic values were determined. During the flooding period, and while the river water was rising, which coincided with a high availability of fruits and seeds, the protein content of food was low (11%-15% of dry matter basis), whereas in the dry season, when tambaqui fed mainly zooplankton, there was a high protein content (45%-57% of dry matter basis). Lipid, carbohydrate, crude fiber, ash and gross energy contents of the diet varied depending on the river water level and the food items ingested.

Using Value Priorities to Explain Differences in Attitudes towards Genetically Modified Food AgEcon
Springer, A.; Tsioumanis, Asterios; Papastefanou, G.; Mattas, Konstadinos.
During the last few years the public has become in general more ambivalent towards new technologies and while expecting technological innovation to make their life better, they still old concerns about possible adverse effects deriving from the use of these technologies. The present paper offers a comparative approach on two European member countries concerning attitudes towards genetically modified food. The paper focus on values because previous research has shown that socio-economic factors can only partially explain differences in attitudes towards genetically modified food. Strong national differences lead to the idea that cultural differences should also be taken into account. Following the approach of Schwartz, the scope of this research paper is to...
